An OPC Member Sold The Gun To Me For N35,000 - Leader Of Robbery Gang Confesses

Leader of a robbery gang, who was arrested in Ibadan, said a member of the Oodua People’s Congress sold him a cut-to-size gun with which he terrorised residents of Ibadan before he was arrested.


The suspect, Abdulkareem Wasiu and three others, Segun Odelotan, Afolabi Segun and Lekan Usman, were on Saturday paraded by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, who was represented by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Kunle Ajisebutu.


Wasiu said the OPC member, identified as Oriyomi, charged him N35,000 for the gun and that he had carried out several robbery operations in Ibadan.

He said, “I bought the gun from an OPC member called Oriyomi to aid our operations. Before we were arrested, we robbed a man of his Toyota Corolla sports car at Muslim area of Ibadan. A ‘receiver’ was already waiting and we delivered it to him. I was paid N25,000 for the job.”

Wasiu said he was a commercial motorcyclist and that after four motorcycles were snatched from him, he took to robbery.

When contacted, one of the leaders of OPC in Ibadan, Adeshina Akinpelu, told our correspondent that none of the group’s members was involved in gun running.

Ajisebutu added that the gang was arrested on the night of March 22 by detectives of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department as they planned to carry out an attack.

He said, “The gang was responsible for a spate of armed robbery incidents in places like Odo-Ona and Muslim areas in Ibadan. They are notorious for attacking victims and robbing them of mobile telephones, cars, motorcycles and other valuables. The gang members had concluded plans to rob another victim when our men arrested them after intelligence gathering. We thank members of the public for their role in helping the police bring an end to the existence of this gang. They will be prosecuted as soon as investigation is concluded.”
